Perseverance pays off! Author Chris Davey solos the Tiger Moth

After his flying training programme was rudely interrupted: first by a bizarre road accident in which a runaway road roller crashed into the side of his truck putting him in hospital, and then just when he reached solo standard a heart problem that resulted in surgery and the loss of his medical for eighteen months, Chris recently flew Tiger Moth G-AHIZ solo for
the first time.

On a perfect evening at Cambridge Airport, his instructor, Ian Oliver climbed out of the front cockpit with the words,
“Okay, off you go, and don’t forget to pick me up when you get back.”

Of course, in the euphoria that follows any first solo, Chris did forget him and had to be reminded by the tower that his instructor was still sitting at the end of the runway.
